Interesting Cases and the Role of the Expert Witness
A female patient attended the accident and emergency (A@E) department with severe abdominal pain. The patient was known to be 34 weeks pregnant. The A@E medical team had reviewed the patient and it was suspected that the cause of the abdominal pain could be gallstones. Patient was sent for an ultrasound scan of the abdomen to check for acute cholecystitis. The ultrasound department is does not cover obstetrics screening. The ultrasound findings of the solid abdominal viscera were unremarkable. A live foetus was seen to be in breech presentation. Upon assessing the foetal position in relation to internal os, it became apparent that the uterus was in fact unremarkable, and that the pregnancy was an abdominal ectopic pregnancy. The patient was referred back to A@E and advised for urgent obstetrics review.
